South African-born Wessel Odendaal is an accomplished composer and multidisciplinary musical collaborator. A classically trained pianist, Wessel studied under the tutelage of the late, world-renowned piano lecturer Joseph Stanford, earning a B.Mus (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria and a National Certificate in Musical Theatre from the Tshwane University of Technology.
Wessel’s experience in musical theatre includes serving as the Musical Director for the South African premieres of Rock of Ages and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. A notable career highlight was serving as Musical Director for the GWB Entertainment production of Avenue Q in Seoul, South Korea. He has also worked as an Assistant Musical Director, Vocal Coach, and musician on international tours of Jersey Boys, The Phantom of the Opera, The Sound of Music, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Cats.
As a composer, arranger, and orchestrator, Wessel has developed several original projects, including musical adaptations of The Jungle Book and The Little Prince, as well as a new original musical for Janice Honeyman’s Malo and the Moon-maiden. His work for the stage also includes original music for productions of The Mystery of Irma Vep, A Christmas Carol, Hamlet, The Tempest, and Twelfth Night.
Equally at home behind the piano or in the recording studio, Wessel often oversees the creative development, music programming, and vocal production of cast recordings and studio projects. Having worked with international teams across America, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Asia, and Europe, he values the perspective gained from a global network and remains keen to collaborate with fellow creatives on diverse projects.
His 2022 composition, STAR+CROSSED, a fictional work based on the life of Elizabeth Klarer, premiered at the Artscape Arena Theatre to critical acclaim. In addition to a nomination for Best New Score at the 2023 Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards, the production received two awards for Best Actor and Actress in a Musical. Wessel is currently finalising original music for upcoming 2026 releases.
